Anyone who is up to 16 years of age automatically pays for National Insurance. Also, your NI Number and National Insurance Card is automatically delivered to you in the post once you start paying for National Insurance. If you’ve not yet received your NI card and number up till 20 years, then you should call the National Insurance Helpline for assistance.
Note that HMRC no longer issues replacement National Cards when you have lost yours. All you have to do is contact the National Insurance Number and they will write back with a copy of your National Insurance number.
The amount you get to pay for your National Insurance will depend on how much you earn and on whether you’re self-employed or an employee. If you have gaps in your payment record, you can also choose to make voluntary contributions. Your NI Contributions will count towards such benefits as Employment and Support Allowance, State Pension, Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA), Maternity Allowance, etc. You can check your NI record to ascertain of your eligibility by calling the National Insurance Helpline on 0843 515 9058.
